Grouse

Grouse

Now on to the Grouse Butts

The main shooting activity over Highland Moorland is for red grouse, which can be done either over setters and pointers, by walking in line with Labradors or spaniels, or by driving the birds to a line of butts. A party shooting over dogs would probably number 2 -4, a walking up party 4 to perhaps 8 and a driven party 8 to 10 guns. Because of the number of people and vehicles involved driven shooting is the most expensive but also the most challenging. Although the season runs from the 12th August to the 10th of December the bulk of the shooting is done between the opening day and mid to late September, a time when the weather should be near it's best and the visibility and scenery quite exceptional. Let days can be for anything from 5 brace (10 birds) for a small day over dogs to 200 brace or more on a driven day.

There are also some excellent driven pheasant and Partridge shoots in the area, some of which are mixed and others almost exclusively for one species. Days vary from a hundred to several hundred birds for which many estates will provide accommodation as well.

There are also opportunities to shoot woodcock, flight duck and have mixed days sport on the basis of both walked up shooting and small driven days.
